Rare & intriguing essential oil that rejuvenates skin's appearance and supports a healthy digestive system.

Buchu is a very rare, uniquely fragrant herb native to the remote mountainous regions of South Africa's Western Cape Province. Growing nowhere else in the world, this region provides the specific climatic conditions and mineral-rich soil needed to establish and maintain this plant, which has been treasured for centuries. Buchu’s rarity is also attributed to its propagation difficulty, high mortality among young seedlings, and poaching. Despite these challenges, the allure of Buchu's unique properties and distinct aroma has inspired ongoing research and initiatives to safeguard its future. The Western Cape Province continues to be the guardian of this extraordinary herb, ensuring that its cultivation remains a sustainable and valuable practice for generations to come.

First used by the Khoekhoe people of South Africa as a traditional remedy, the buchu plant found its way into the apothecaries and pharmacopeias of Western Europe in the late 1600s. Since then, it has been used to support a wide range of applications and is a highly sought-after ingredient across the cosmetic, fragrance, and flavor industries.

Therapeutically, Buchu is known for cleansing and soothing the skin, helping maintain a clear complexion, reducing redness, and protecting against harmful bacteria and free radicals. It is also commonly associated with digestive support, soothing sore, stiff muscles and joints, and aiding in the body’s natural detoxification process, leading to its reputation as a tonic for physical well-being.

Pungent green leafy scent with a bitter, minty backnote.

How to Use

Aromatically, Buchu has a strong, pungent, and sulfuric scent, with penetrating green, leafy notes and hints of mint and bitter rootiness. When inhaled neat, its intensity out of the bottle can be quite overbearing. Not for the faint of heart, Buchu’s intriguing, penetrating scent lends a one-of-a-kind characteristic when added (in small amounts!) to essential oil blends. Try blending with florals such as Jasmine, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, and Neroli, or with more woody and resinous oils such as Cedarwood, Frankincense, Sandalwood, and Patchouli. It is known to enhance the subtle qualities of other oils and add a black currant-type note to the blend.

Aromatic: Diffuse using 1-2 drops per 100 mL of water.
Topical: Dilute to 0.5-1% in a carrier.

Helped me with UTI pain.
This oil is effective in relieving UTI pain. I bought one, then three more. Yes, the aroma is pungent. I wear it at night, hoping it fades overnight. I've found that adding orange and lemon essential oils on top of it helps to mitigate the smell. I also tried adding peppermint on top, but I feel like the citrus oils help more, since it has a slight orangey undertone to it
